How non-fault claims work
Why is there no cost to you?
For non-fault accidents, the at-fault driver's insurer is legally required to put you back to where you were before the accident. We recover those costs directly from them. You pay £0.
The legal principle
Indemnity
Under English common law, the negligent party (or their insurer) must restore you to the position you were in immediately before the accident — financially, practically, and as far as money can. This is called the principle of indemnity.
In a non-fault accident, that means the at-fault driver's insurer pays for: vehicle repairs, a like-for-like replacement vehicle while yours is off the road, recovery and storage if needed, your insurance excess (if you claimed on your own policy), and any other reasonable losses caused by their driver's negligence.
You don't need to claim on your own insurance, you don't risk your no-claims bonus, and you don't pay an excess. That's the whole point.
How we get paid
If it's free for you, who pays us?
Three things you should know.
Credit hire
Subrogated repairs
Personal injury referral
Disputed liability
What if the other driver disputes liability?
Most non-fault accidents have clear liability — rear-end collisions, side-swipes, hit-and-runs reported to the MIB. We assess liability before opening a credit-hire claim and we're transparent if there's any doubt.
If liability is split or disputed, we'll explain the implications before you commit. We don't take cases where you'd end up out of pocket without telling you upfront.
At-fault accidents
What if I was at fault?
For at-fault accidents, the costs aren't recoverable from another insurer — your own policy covers what it covers. We can still help: review your policy, manage repairs at our in-house bodyshop, and arrange a replacement vehicle if your policy includes that cover. But your excess applies and you may pay for some services directly.
See the at-fault claims page for the details.
